Playing career
Mayock played football for his high school, The Haverford School in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and college football at Boston College, where he also played baseball. He was picked as a safety by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the tenth round of the 1981 NFL Draft, as the 25th overall pick. On August 18, 1981, Mike was waived during the first roster cuts. Following his release, he signed with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts in the 1981 season. Prior to being released he just played one game and went back to the NFL with the New York Giants for the 1982 and 1983 football seasons.
In 1982, Mike played in the first two games of the season prior to the players’ strike causing the cancellation of the next eight games. After the players came back on November 21, Mayock tore his rotator cuff in a game against the Washington Redskins and was placed on Injured Reserve on November 24, 1982. Prior to the beginning of the 1983 season, Mike was again placed on Injured Reserve on August 30, after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. He was later removed from the list on October 16, 1983. Mayock played in one game prior to being placed again on injured reserve on October 24, 1983. On November 19, 1983, following clearing procedural waivers, he was activated from the list. After this, he played in the remaining five games of the season and was then waived by the Giants on July 27, 1984.
