Ginny & Georgia is a Netflix series from creator Sarah Lampert. The show was greenlit in August of 2019 and after a short casting period filming began in Canada the very next day. The 10 episode series finished filming on 10 December 2019 and after over a year of post-production, Netflix is releasing the drama series this month.
The new Netflix drama series follows Ginny Miller who has an eccentric mother, Georgia Miller. Constantly moving from place to place, Georgia decides to settle down in a suburban town in New England. Trying to give her daughter, Ginny, and son, Austin, a life she never had. But soon things from her past started to unravel their quiet family life.
Antonia Gentry plays Ginny Miller in Ginny & Georgia. She is a 15-year-old girl who does not understand her mother. More mature than her mother, Ginny becomes tired of constantly moving from place to place. So when their family decides to stop in New England, the hope of normal life seems possible, even if it was for a little while.
Netflix is releasing Ginny & Georgia on 24 February 2021. The cast is led by Brianne Howey as Georgia Miller, Antonia Gentry as Ginny Miller, and Diesel La Torraca as Austin Miller. There are obvious parallels between you and Ginny, but what was harder for you to connect with?
At that age, I was very introverted. I was into books. I was awkward. I didn’t really know how to relate to my peers; it seemed they all had the right script, and I didn’t, and I couldn’t put my finger on why. So with Ginny, those moments of isolation and confusion I really related to. But there are differences, like her mother is white. My mother is Black. So I actually learned from playing Ginny another experience of being biracial.
My mom knew how to do my hair. She sheltered me a lot—or tried to keep me from walking out the door wearing my skin on my sleeve. She tried to instill in me, “You are not what other people prescribe you to be. You are who you are, and you need to accept yourself.” And that’s easy to say, but when you’re a kid and you’re trying to fit in, that’s not very easy to apply.
Ginny’s mom, Georgia, she tries her hardest, but there are fundamental things she isn’t able to relate to with her daughter. She makes mistakes, and they don’t always communicate clearly with each other. And so those were some differences I found between Ginny and I and how Ginny reacts with her mom and how she reacts to wanting to fit in.
